Women‘s Careers and Networks Symposium

Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) – 6 March 2013: A symposium organized by PhD students with lectures, plenary discussions, career fair and networking dinner where female scientists get the chance to explore different career options and establish the contacts to promote their career path.

“What to do after my PhD? Continue academic research abroad? Become a PostDoc or join industry? How about consulting? And how do I combine a successful career with a family?”

Asking questions and finding answers – that’s what the Women’s Careers and Networks Symposium www.wocanet.uni-goettingen.de, organized by PhD students of the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB), is all about. After the success of the first symposium in November 2011, the next conference will take place on Wednesday, 6 March 2013 at Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen.

Exploring diverse career options

The aim is yet again to bring together female PhD students and PostDocs to meet successful women of varied professional background (academic and industrial research, patent law and public relation) to exchange ideas and experiences and to discuss diverse career options.

The symposium will be opened by Prof. Dr. Rita Süssmuth, former president of the German Parliament and Prof. Dr. Reinhard Jahn, director at MPIbpc. Speakers include renowned researchers like Prof. Dr. Carol Robinson from the University of Oxford and Prof. Dr. Julia Fischer from the German Primate Center in Göttingen. Besides academic research, insight will be given into patent law and industrial research. Dr. Emily Monosson, scientist and author of the book “Motherhood, the elephant in the laboratory”, will highlight numerous ways in which women can successfully combine a family and a career in science.

All talks will be followed by interactive discussions with the participants. For more information about the program and the speakers, please visit: www.wocanet.uni-goettingen.de.

Excellent networking opportunities

A great novelty will be the Career Fair in the foyer of MPIbpc with information on support for women in science and networking possibilities. There will be a CV check point and organizations giving advice on the compatibility of family and career. The interactive concept of the symposium includes an exclusive Networking Dinner as an exceptional networking platform where the speakers meet a limited number of participants. Candidates interested in attending the dinner are asked to send a personal career profile to wocanet@gwdg.de.

Registration is open now at www.wocanet.uni-goettingen.de until 1 February 2013.

The organizing committee is looking forward to welcoming you to this outstanding event!
