Female students of engineering sciences increased by 2.7%

In the academic year of 2012 (summer semester of 2012 and winter semester of 2012/13), nearly 106,300 new entrants enrolled for engineering sciences – that was a decline of 8.8% on a year earlier. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports on the basis of provisional results that the number of male students enrolling for engineering sciences for the first time decreased by 11.8%, while that of female students increased by 2.7%.

Those contradictory trends were due to the suspension of compulsory military service in 2011, which led to a marked increase in the number of male new entrants at that time. In areas of study such as engineering sciences where the proportion of men is particularly high, this has had a clear impact on the development of the number of first-year students.
